Women’s Day event brings together more than 100 women

The Community, Arts and Culture Development Department celebrated women from across the city last week at a Women’s Day Celebration held in the mayoral banqueting hall in the Cape Town Civic Centre.

More than 100 women attended the event. They came from a number of areas including Joe Slovo, Wallacedene, Scottsdene, Wolwerivier, Pella, Valhalla Park, Atlantis, Bonteheuwel, Langa, Brooklyn and Fisantekraal.

The day featured a mix of entertainment and discussions on issues affecting women in South Africa, like prioritising mental health and issues around gender based violence. One of the guest speakers also shared her journey as a woman in business.

‘We celebrate the remarkable women who are making an impact in their communities in their own way. At the same time, we are mindful that there is still a lot of work to do to ensure women in our communities are safe wherever they go and they are treated fairly. Everyone has a role to play in creating a more gender-balanced city, and I want to encourage the women of Cape Town that we see you and we stand with you,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

 
The theme for the event was Accelerate Action.

‘I’m proud to say that here in the City of Cape Town, we are not just talking: we are working every day to put these ideas into practice, but we cannot do it alone. We invest millions into facilities, and they belong to you. I encourage you to take ownership of your clinics, libraries, halls, sports fields and parks. We must commit to safeguarding these spaces for us all,’ added Councillor Higham.
